It’s a fact: asking for money is difficult. I have not met anyone, including me, who is always motivated to fundraise.
It’s a tough task, but it’s also an important one, especially if you want to reach new heights with your mission. To do this, we have to get out of our comfort zones, and this isn’t easy to do.
When we place our emotions, constraints, and preferences above the mission and work, we inadvertently block it. We are unable to overcome our personal struggles for Christ. This is often the case when it comes to fundraising.
I found it helpful to remember that the mission must come first, not you or me. When you are willing to commit to something bigger than yourself, you also willing to do things you are unsure of how to start or even where to begin. Fear is present. However, when you are open to walking in faith, which means trusting that things will work out, your fundraising will benefit. Most important, your mission will benefit.
To overcome your fear of fundraising, sometimes it’s best to start small. Often, when I help Catholic charities with fundraising, they want to jump in the deep end and start with a big campaign. I have found that the greatest improvements often come from focusing on the smaller things.
As you move forward, you find that those challenges which seemed so terrifying now are not that bad. By taking that small step forward, you are fundraising with confidence and success.
Here are eight small tasks that will help you improve fundraising in a big way to become a better fundraiser:
1/ Share with someone new every day what your charity does
2/ Ask someone to join your email list
3/ Ask a person to volunteer at an event
4/ Speak to a group about what you do
5/ Write an email to 5 colleagues asking for feedback about one thing you can do better
6/ Donate both time and money to another charity
7/ Help your parish priest with one of his projects
8/ Ask your donors what one thing they’d like you to do more in the coming six months is
Fundraising will always take you out of your comfort zone. The best way to overcome those fears is by doing small things you normally won’t do. Bit by bit, you realize that doing tasks you thought were scary aren’t that bad.
In fact, you start focusing on the benefits of doing them and forget how scary they once appeared.
