I’m going to share three fantastic places where you can find a fundraising or development officer. Whatever you do (or don’t) want to call them, this is the person that’s going to be asking for your donations, so I am going to share three places where you can look (and I think you’re really going to like all three suggestions because they’re going to give you great, great possibilities).
So please, stick with me until the very end.

Today’s topic is, where to find a good fundraising development officer? To start, I’m going to give you three places where you can look. First and foremost, look at yourself and at your board of directors. (BTW, if you see me looking down, that’s because I’ve got notes with this, and when you go to my website, you can get all of the notes for yourself, as well.
So… the people and leaders inside an apostolate are always the best places to start looking, especially if you don’t feel comfortable doing it (welcome to the club). I really recommend looking at your volunteers and your people at the top. They are already the closest to the mission, to its projects, and to the plans for the future. They are already the people who can best explain all of these things (who can “tell the story” to donors and potential donors). They are already inspired by the mission, by what you’re doing, and by the people and stories behind it.
And there’s no way around saying it, you’re also always going to be best served by yourself. Yes, it is difficult to join that club. But relax, because the best part is, it’s difficult for everybody. Asking for money, asking for support, is not easy. So if you find that courage to fundraise, you are already ahead of the pack. So that’s suggestion number one on where to find a great fundraiser (psst, look in the mirror).
Suggestion number two is, train your board members, train your board members. A board member is there because they are capable of offering direction on where the apostolate should go, and possibly how money is spent. I really recommend that your board members should be expected to be active in fundraising. What does this mean? Not only that they should be donating but that they should be inviting other people into the apostolate because they’re in a great position “at the top” to inspire more people “below” to donate.
So look to your board of directors, and train your board members. This leads me to my third point: Get expert help if necessary. Get training for yourself, or for board members, using a professional resource, ( like CatholicFundraiser.net), that will teach people how to fundraise. y This may prove the most costly option but if you go with hiring at the “lower end,” more likely than not your hire is not going to stay for very long. If you hire somebody at a mid-level rate, they are still probably going to move on to another position within a year, to a year and a half. These are the statistics and (obviously) the greater the level of expertise, the costlier it will be to your budget, and even at a higher salary, they might leave after a while because they are not seeing the growth that they want to achieve as a professional fundraiser.
So my key point is when you are looking for a voice to lead your fundraising, the best places to look are to start with yourself, then start with your board, and then get some proper training to learn how to do this stuff yourself. Yes, it’s difficult. I get it. I hear you, I can hear you, as you’re watching this video, saying, this is just something I don’t like doing. Well, welcome to the club. That’s why CatholicFundraiser.net exists. Because no one else likes doing this, either. So this is where you can find tips and strategies on how to start overcoming all of these resistant emotions (that everybody feels). Even I feel them! So you have to just push through that feeling and recognize that you’re asking for donations for a great cause. That’s what you are really trying to do. You’re trying to do more for your Catholic mission and fundraising is just one of the vehicles that help you do it.
When you learn how to fundraise properly in a Catholic context, you’re able to do more for your mission, serve more people, and bring more people to Christ. That is our biggest objective — on everything that you do, or that I do — while helping thousands of Catholics along the way.
