Suggestions on how to fundraise from Fr Alphonsus Rodriguez

Insight from Fr Alphonsus Rodriguez's spiritual classic, The Practice of Christian & Spiritual Perfection

Here’s a curveball for you: Are a vow of poverty and fundraising compatible?

You have likely struggled to answer this question, wondering how the two can possibly coexist. You may have even had people complain to you that you should NOT be fundraising because as a Catholic, you should take a “vow of poverty.”

Okay… but how do you keep the lights on?

Whether you have taken a vow of poverty as a religious or strive to follow this Christian practice, the reality is you may have to fundraise to pay for the necessary costs of your vocation.

Therefore, how do you connect the vow of poverty with fundraising?

Enter Fr Alphonsus Rodriguez, a Jesuit priest from the 16th century and a renowned spiritual writer. He explains – in practical terms – how you and I can balance a vow of poverty and fundraising.

These ideas come from his masterpiece, The Practice of Christian & Religious Perfection.

Saint Leo the Great explains how to fundraise

3 helpful fundraising ideas from one of the greatest popes in history

I am positive you know who Pope (and Saint) Leo the Great is. One of the greatest and most influential popes in Church history, he fought off the heresies of Pelagianism and Manichaeism in the 5th century. He also led Rome’s defense against Attila the Hun’s barbarian invasion on Italy.

Did you also know that he liked fundraising?

But pause for a second…

He didn’t like fundraising the way you are probably thinking. Pope Leo was not interested in running fundraising campaigns so that Catholic causes like yours can just get donations.

Like every saint, he saw the BIGGER picture.

I’m always in search of ideas from the saints on how to fundraise. Today let’s take a look at Saint Robert Bellarmine – Doctor of the Church.

I read a great biography on his life and discovered three incredibly helpful ideas on how to fundraise — so I wanted to share them with you.

This week’s article is all about what to do when wealthy people don’t donate and how to steward people’s donations (even if the pope gives you a gift!)

Saint Bernard’s advice to Catholics who fundraise

Saint Bernard of Clairvaux's "No Excuse" approach to raising funds

Many people give me excuses about why they are not planning, organizing, and launching a campaign. If you paused fundraising in, the time is NOW to get back on the saddle.

But don’t take my word for it.

Learn what Saint Bernard of Clairvaux says about making excuses for why there are no funds in your accounts. Take a look:

Saint Anthony of Padua teaches how to fundraise

Biblical advice on fundraising from the book, The Moral Concordances of Saint Anthony of Padua

The world has changed a lot since Saint Anthony of Padua was preaching in the 13th century. Back then, you did not have the internet, email, websites, video, or audio recordings… so asking for donations looked utterly different.

But there is something that hasn’t changed in 800 years, and that is keeping our appeals aligned with Scripture.

Saint Anthony of Padua wrote one of my favorite guides on connecting fundraising with Scripture.

His book, ‘The Moral Concordances,’ offers you and me the perfect compass for navigating a campaign.

What Catholic Social Doctrine says about Fundraising

Three recommendations about how to fundraise from the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church

Make sure to get your free copy of ‘The 10 Commandment of Catholic Fundraising’. It’s a book that highlights the ten tasks you should do to keep you focused on your mission and hit your fundraising target, every time.

You likely read a lot of books and articles about what the Church teaches, but have you ever read this vital document?

The Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church (softcover and digital copies available here)

Published in 2004 by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace at the request of John Paul II,  this document presents a “complete overview of the fundamental framework of the doctrinal corpus of Catholic social teaching.”

I have scrubbed the document from cover to cover, and I found some helpful suggestions for… you guessed it! … Catholic Fundraisers.

With so much going on this summer, I thought these insights for the Pontifical Council will help you focus on finding more donors.
