How Catholic Apostolates Can Make the Most of Giving Tuesday

We are a few weeks away from Giving Tuesday (the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving).

Giving Tuesday is a day when non-profits encourage people to donate to their favorite causes.

Why is this day so important for you and your apostolate? It is one of those rare days people expect you to ask for donations. Therefore, you must seize this opportunity!

Today, I want to share with you how to make the most of this day.

Greetings, my fellow Catholics! Today, we are going to be talking about ‘Giving Tuesday.’ I have three tips to give you on what I think you can do to have your own very successful and rewarding Giving Tuesday. So that’s what we’re going to talk about in the next few minutes. Stick with me for the third point, because I think it’s going to wrap everything up and answer a lot of questions for you about social media, using Facebook, and all those other buzzwords, hashtags, and things you have probably heard about doing for Giving Tuesday. I’m going to wrap that all together for you in my three points today.

Giving Tuesday: Should you participate? The overall answer is yes. (By the way, I’m looking at my notes, and they will be included on my website at the link below, so don’t worry you won’t miss any details. Catholics seek to raise millions of dollars on that specific day. Giving Tuesday is a day of giving for not just Catholics, but for all non-profit organizations. So this is definitely a day/event where you should be fundraising. People are expecting to be asked. 

So… if you are afraid to ask because you are worried that you might be put off or you’re afraid that people might not like the fact that you’re asking, well now is a great opportunity! On Giving Tuesday people are expecting to be asked, so jump on that bandwagon and take advantage of Giving Tuesday! 

And take advantage of my three recommendations on what to consider doing to get the most out of Giving Tuesday.

First and foremost,  build your ask. Apart from asking because it’s Giving Tuesday, you have to have a clear reason as to why you are asking for donations. This is what they call your “elevator pitch.” It’s your quickest way of explaining why we’re asking for money, and why you should please support your mission. 

Here are my three basic suggestions: 

Number one, you want to explain what you’ve recently accomplished. 

Number two, you want to lay out your plan of what you’re going to accomplish in the near future. The more specific the better. 

Then have a clear request. Make sure people understand that you’re asking for donations. Don’t be wishy-washy. You got to be clear and ask. 

My second point is to ask the people around you. So gather up all the contacts that you have, whether it’s phone numbers, emails, letters, whatever. Start with anyone and everyone and be as personable as possible. 

Here is a very interesting statistic when it comes to fundraising: You have a 70% chance of people saying yes when it’s in person or over the phone. You have a 1-2% chance if you are asking via a letter or an email. So you have a 70% chance when you’re asking directly as compared to a 1-2%! Those are the statistics. So first and foremost, ask the people that are right in front of you 

My final point is to go social. It’s always good to set up and run a Facebook Giving Tuesday campaign.  It’s easy. Just search Facebook, ‘Giving Tuesday’ and you’ll find instructions on how to do it. It’s simply putting a post up. You can collect donations via Facebook if you want, or you can direct them to your donation page (I recommend a donation page as opposed to via Facebook). Either way,  definitely set that up, and also, if you are a registered nonprofit with your Catholic diocese, you can participate in what’s called the hashtag (#) #IGiveCatholic campaign. I’ll give you the link to that as well. Those are my three recommendations. Especially, go social and cast your net wide. My second point is,  ask the people around you first because you’re going to have the best chance of actually getting donations with those people. And my last point — the one I started with — is simply to build your donation. Make sure that you’ve figured out what your key points are before you actually make that request to people.
